      <image:caption>The symptoms of endometriosis can impact us anywhere, at any time. And where do we often spend a lot of our time? Work. I’m sure many of us know the embarrassment and frustration of being caught-out with pain in a meeting, or needing to rush to the bathroom suddenly due to flooding, or falling asleep at the desk! In fact, endometriosis was once nicknamed ‘the career woman’s disease’. It was once thought by doctors and researchers that women who made the decision to have children later in life (those pursuing education or careers) were more likely to develop it! Obviously, this myth has now been debunked, but endometriosis has long been a gendered, politicised and neglected disease. Thankfully, it is now starting to be taken more seriously by doctors, academics and the workplace! In Australia, the government organisation Safe Work Australia has now released a fact sheet on Supporting workers with endometriosis in the workplace as part of their 2018 National Action Plan for Endometriosis. These implementations make it possible for a woman with endometriosis to access understanding, support and reasonable adjustments to their work environment. This is a wonderful step in the right direction. A helpful way of letting your workplace know you have endometriosis is by sending the fact sheet link to your HR Administrator or your manager so you can receive the support and understanding you deserve. But telling our endometriosis story has power - and it may be one of the most powerful medicines for us on earth - switching off our toxic stress hormones and switching on the relaxation response that releases healing hormones.       <image:title>My Story - Then I started to take control of my health</image:title>
      <image:caption>During that time, natural therapies and practitioners started to shine a beacon of light for me and provided a road back to myself. I found answers and relief. Natural health healers instructed me in the craft of castor-oil packs, womb steams, abdominal massage, essential oils and supplementation. Acupuncture (blessed acupuncture!) helped to reduce my pain levels down to almost zero, my nutrition training taught me about a low-inflammation diet and life-style, and my counselling experience taught me about training my mind. I began to move my body and ground my being, and I began to heal… My road, like many women with endometriosis, has been long, at times very dark, confusing, often lonely, and with many twists and turns and new road-blocks at different stages. I know I am one of the lucky ones. I received a fairly early diagnosis compared to others. I had only been putting up with the pain for 8 years at that stage - not 18. Or 28. The OB/GYN I saw listened to me, pre-diagnosed me almost immediately and did not dismiss me, like some women have experienced. For that I am forever grateful, and I am now so overjoyed with current medical research and awareness surrounding endometriosis - but we still have so far to go. Since 26 years old, my quest has been to take back control of my health. Now that quest has become to support other women with endometriosis take back control of their health, so we can move from surviving to thriving!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Endometriosis - Endo what?!</image:title>
      <image:caption>It’s a mouth-full, that’s for sure! What are the indicators of endometriosis? The main symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain which can be severe (think of searing, pulsating, stabbing pain) and it can last for many days, keeping you house-bound and from living a normal life. Other indicators of endometriosis are long, heavy, crampy and clotty menstrual flow, nausea and vomiting, bowel and bladder problems, abdominal bloating, debilitating fatigue, depression and anxiety, headaches, pain or bleeding during sex, bleeding between periods, low-grade fever, infertility and recurrent miscarriage. It’s a long and nasty list. What is endometriosis? Endometriosis is a condition where bits of body tissue similar to your uterine lining (the endometrium) grow in places outside your uterus. This out-of-place tissue (also called endometriosis lesions) behave in the same way as the tissue in your uterine lining - it thickens and bleeds every month, but the blood cannot escape. Over time, this monthly shedding causes the formation of scar tissue, cysts and adhesions around the endometriosis lesion which causes an immune response in the body leading to chronic inflammation. These adhesions can also stick pelvic organs to each other and cause twists and blockages. It is important to know that endometriosis is fundamentally an inflammatory disease, and while the growth of endometriosis lesions are strongly stimulated by estrogen, it is not a hormonal condition, but an immune dysfunction - potentially an auto-immune related condition. Is endometriosis a common condition? Yes - unfortunately it is a very common condition. It often starts in our early reproductive years and affects one in ten women. Worse still - it is not easy to identify and it can take up to ten years to diagnose. This is because exploratory laparoscopy (keyhole) surgery is still the only definite method of confirming the presence of endometriosis. A pelvic ultrasound can sometimes detect endometriomas (blood-filled cysts on the ovaries) but the scan cannot confirm or rule-out endometriosis. Pretty rough hey?! How can I treat endometriosis? Endometriosis is a serious disease and there is currently no cure. Excision surgery can be helpful for some women’s endometriosis for a time, but it is not a cure and further surgery may be required. In addition, the surgery itself can create further scar tissue/adhesions which in time lead to further pain. Hormonal birth control is often prescribed as a treatment for endometriosis but these drugs suppress natural hormonal activity, have concerning side effects, often do not help women deal with the pain and can mask what is actually going on in the body. However, the GOOD news is that natural treatment methods can help relieve, diminish and heal many aspects of endometriosis.       <image:title>Do I Have Endo? - Self Assessment</image:title>
      <image:caption>Fact: 1 in 10 women develop endometriosis. Fact: It typically takes up to 10 years for a diagnosis of endometriosis Fact: I do not want you to spend ten years in crippling pain, feeling helpless, because you have been told it’s “just period pain”! Carry out a little self assessment by reading the common symptoms of endometriosis below, then have a chat with your doctor. Ask her outright if you should have further checks for endometriosis. It’s helpful to know that endo is not the same in all women. Symptoms can differ. Some woman may have all the symptoms, others some, others none until they are trying to conceive and struggle. Symptoms can also change during a monthly cycle and also over time (this was the case for me!)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Do I Have Endo? - Symptoms</image:title>
      <image:caption>Pain: one of the main symptom of endometriosis is pain which is often severe and chronic. You know your pain is severe if it doesn’t go away when you take ibuprofen and it stops you from your daily activities. The pain can be bearing down labour-like pain, dragging, searing, pulsating, stabbing and can be so intense that you vomit. The pain can occur in your uterus, lower back, rectum, bladder, legs and in other areas of your pelvis. The pain is most often cyclical. It most commonly occurs during your period but can also occur during ovulation, during sex, preceding or during a bowel or bladder movement, or during or after a pelvic examination. Heavy/Clotting Periods: if you are experiencing periods that are often heavy or ‘flooding’, then this could be an indication of endometriosis associated with excess oestrogen. More than 80ml is a heavy flow. This is 4 tablespoons throughout your whole period (16 fully soaked regular tampons or pads/8 fully soaked super tampons or pads). As your flow should subside as you sleep, you shouldn’t need to be changing your menstrual product during the night. Large menstrual clots are also a possible indication of endometriosis (also associated with excess oestrogen). A few small clots are nothing to be concerned about and are quite normal, but seeing clots on a regular basis that are larger than 2.4 cm (an Australian ten-cent coin) could be a sign of endo.</image:caption>
